History
The Can Can
The CANCAN (Fr.) is a rather impetuous party dance in a 2/4 measure, where the legs take
turns to stretch as high as possible. The CanCan was brought to France from Algeria in 1830
and at that point in time became more and more variety theatre. Famous is the CanCan in
Offenbach's 'Orphée aux enfers'(1858).
The steps and movements of the CanCan were quite a standard to moral corruption. For this
the police forbade the CanCan in the first years. Just because of this, the CanCan soon became
very popular and controversial.
In America the CanCan was first danced for an audience on the 12th of September 1866 in the
“Black Crook” in New York.
The CanCan is also called “Edge” because on stage the dance was often performed on the edge
of stage. The dance was originally performed by both men and women. These days it is only danced
by women during western shows and western movies.
